Former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, a West Michigan native, made at least $225 million in outside income during her time serving in the Trump administration.
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization focused on government transparency, found in an analysis of DeVos’s financial disclosures that DeVos, Trump’s wealthiest cabinet members, made well over nine figures over the last four years based on reporting in three different yearly financial disclosures and her final termination report.
DeVos resigned from her position in Trump’s cabinet in January with only two weeks before Democratic President Joe Biden was inaugurated.
The financial reports show that DeVos made at least $75 million from Alticor, the parent company of Amway.
However, it’s unclear exactly how much DeVos made during her tenure in the White House because some of her financial reports were vague, listed as “over $5 million” or “over $1 million,” according to CREW.
CREW states that her earnings while working under Trump could be “well over” $414 million.
After receiving backlash for ethical issues regarding her involvement in various companies and her family’s donations to political groups and candidates, DeVos agreed to donate her salary, about $800,000 over four years.
